thank goodness we brought the dog

I've been following the story of the hikers stranded on Mount Hood. Yesterday, they fell from a 100 foot cliff, along with their black labrador, Velvet.
They made it through the night, thanks in large part to Velvet. According to one of the rescue team, "The dog probably saved their lives by lying across them during the cold night."
What a fine dog.

i was following this yesterday, too. i was so relieved when i'd heard the dog was saved, too. for some reason, i'm always much more concerned about the dogs in these scenarios than the humans (not that i'm indifferent to the people, but they chose to be there; the dog was just being loyal).
that dog's a hero.
So true. The humans were worried about freezing to death, the dog focused on everyone staying warm and tucked in close. Velvet knew what to do.
There are here dogs everywhere this month. Last week on NPR there was a story about how a seeing eye dog saved it's companion from walking out into an intersection and being run over by a bus (the intersection is apparently notorious for blind people in NYC, as the wind between buildings somehow obscures the sound of traffic).
Tonight, I saw this, but it is sad.
