Art of storytelling

Storytelling has taken a back seat in today’s world, but this was not the case always. Storytelling has been historically an inspirational tool through which the ancients would pass on wisdom, experiences and actual happenings which have played a major role in shaping our culture today. This has been a continuous process from generation to generation. In earlier times parents used to settle all the children together at a specific place and tell them the stories. They never used to read the stories, but would tell them. Most of these stories could have been real happenings. Storytelling helps children to increase their imaginations. Effective storytelling can actually stimulate the picture of the story in the in mind of a child. The best storytelling is done when you can remember the story and can say it without reading, with the help of great voice modulation and expressions. You can also use objects to make the story more pictorial, for example I have seen some story tellers use silver jewellery to highlight the role of a princes and similarly a rope to symbolize a slave. When parents become creative with their storytelling, it not only takes your children off to a deep sleep full of nice dreams, but also helps your children develop their individual creativity.

In case if you do not have an original story to tell then you can read a story from the book and memorize it. Your children would love it if you tell the story without the help of a book. You can also add a few parts on your own as a starter for trying to make your own story. Slowly and steadily you might be able to create your own stories. While telling the story, always try and remember what the next part is going to be. Any hint of getting stuck will make your child lose interest.
