And The Parents Shall Lead
Stories are one of the oldest forms of communication humanity has. Through stories we have grown and developed culture, science and religion. Without stories we would be little more then mobile apes who occasionally grunt and make noises. Art and medicine are two aspects of human nature that have grown exponentially thanks to stories. Everyday we go about our lives and business often forgetting the importance of storytelling and how without it we would be a substantially lesser race.

A lot of the recent problems the UK experienced with the riots can in part be explained by the lack of attention these children and young teenagers have had when growing up. It is not their fault. The blame lies with the people who raised them, be it parents or teachers or both. The Evening Standard in London recently started a campaign to improve the standard of reading and writing amongst children in the UK. Many children start secondary school without being able to read the most basic of sentences. This all stems from children not being told stories and learning to read for them selves at a young age. Young adults who want to apply for nursing jobs lack the basic reading skills required to even begin contemplating careers in medicine.
Stories are essential to our development. It is also essential to developing our reading and writing skills. There are still many professionals in the medical industry that cannot communicate effectively. Advertising nurse jobs is all well and good but if applicants lack the ability to read the text and understand it properly, then what chance do they have in performing the job effectively? Story telling is not just an art form it is an educational learning tool. Just because it encourages the mind to run away into fantasy does not mean it should be denigrated or considered any less worthwhile then the sciences.
Story telling should start from a young age and the reason that there are so many children with a reading and writing deficiency in the UK is due to their parents either being unwilling but in more cases unable to read and tell stories to their children. This is a terribly sad state of affairs to be in, but it is one that can be corrected.
